Guidelines for Readers.
Before Mass
Make sure you know the correct reading.
Read through the text in the lectionary no later than 10 minutes before Mass begins. Before Mass begins in Church, preferably aloud.
Check which “Allelluia” is to be said (There is often more than one printed in the lectionary – be sure to lead the one printed on the missalette the congregation has)
Adjust height of microphone so that it is correct for you.
Reading Scripture
Bow to the altar from the centre of the aisle and walk across to the lectern.
Wait for the congregation to settle before beginning.
Look up and say, ‘ A reading from...’ Do not say ‘ The first/second reading is a reading...’
Always read from the lectionary itself, not from a booklet or paper.
Do not carry anything to the lectern – no papers, handbag, books….
If you make a mistake whilst reading, just carry on.
Pause before announcing ‘The word of the Lord’
Psalm
Say the response and allow the people to repeat it, leading them if necessary. Never say ‘The response to the psalm is...’
Pause at the end of each verse and allow people to respond, leading them if necessary.
Gospel Acclamation
Never say ‘The gospel acclamation is..’
The Alleluia part is normally sung. Lead the reading of the verse then return to your place during the singing of “Alleluia” after the verse.
(The word “Alleluia” is never used in the season of lent).
Intercessions
After the Creed, allow the celebrant to introduce the intercessions (from the lectern) then walk to the lectern to lead the bidding prayers
Having invited people to pray for an intention, allow them to do so; pause - for at least five seconds - before announcing, ‘Lord, hear us.’ (Or “Lord, in your mercy”)
Return to your seat only when the celebrant has said the concluding prayer and the congregation has said “Amen”
